ABOUT

Formed at Rosebud Secondary College circa 2010, Police & Thieves are four old mates from the same primary school. Sharing a love of New York guitar bands like The Strokes and Television, combined with a taste for British slacker pop - the Libertines and the Kinks - the band have forged some exciting guitar-driven underground indie pop: ‘the new down-under’

Q&A, with Rudie(singer,bass)

Define your genre in five words or less:

indie rocknroll dirty edgy

How long have you been writing and playing music? Was there a song or moment that first inspired you?

We have all been playing together for years but with the addition of our new drummer (Louis Henry) and a band name, have only recently started writing original songs and playing gigs. Our first song we recorded was 'Creature' which gave all of us the motivation to start taking things seriously.

What are your favourite venues?

My favorite venues in Melbourne would have to be the Hi-Fi Bar because of its intimate yet spacious set up and Festival hall because of it's amazing shape and history.

What is your most memorable gig (playing or watching)?

The Strokes at Splendour in the Grass 2010

Where do you usually draw inspiration from as a writer? Do you have a process? eg music first, lyrics first etc

Inspiration comes from just how im feeling at the time or things I have seen or heard that gives me the drive to right a song. It normally starts with me just strumming on the guitar to find a melody and the lyrics follow shortly after that. Then I bring the song to the band and we put it all together with drums, bass etc.
