Q&A

Define your genre in five words or less:

Bar Romantic

How long have you been writing and playing music? Was there a song or moment that first inspired you?

I will in 2012 sometime have been gigging for 20 years. I started writing songs 5 years earlier when I was 13.

If you could travel back in time and show one of your musical heroes your stuff, who would it be and why?

David Bowie, the Smiths or U2 or Johnny Cash so I could try to explain to them how hard it was to choose only 5 albums for this questionnaire.

What are your favourite venues?

Packed ones, as long as I have a backstage pass.

What are your top 5 favourite albums?

Songs of Leonard Cohen, Henry's Dream (Nick Cave), OK Computer (Radiohead), Harvest (Neil Young), The Essential Bob Dylan,

What is your most memorable gig (playing or watching)?

It's a choice between the biggest (supporting The Tea Party in front of 5,000 people) or the most ego-gratifying (my old band Reckoning's CD launch in front of 500) or any one of several different Melting Pot "Songwriters In The Round" (no really, I love them).

Where do you usually draw inspiration from as a writer? Do you have a process? eg music first, lyrics first etc

I make funny sounds with my mouth as I write the melodies and then eventually start penning words. Or sometimes the words and vocal melody comes to me and I go and grab a guitar and work out what chords it needs.
