Melting Pot’s Top 4: Thursday, 18th August, 2016
Hello and welcome to another installation of ‘Melting Pot’s Top 4’ – where we bring you the 4 absolute must-see gigs in Melbourne this coming week.
We’re scouring deep and hard to find you the cream of the crop that live music in this town has to offer!
The amazing DEEP STREET SOUL continue to captivate audiences all around the world with their fresh, modern take on jivin’ soul and bass-thumping funk.
They’re bringing it all to a very small room allowing for a very intimate and warm vibe, at Northcote’s Open Studio, serving up the best crepes money can buy! Fresh off the back of their 3rd LP, these guys are the real deal in not only the Australian funk & soul scene, but the WORLD scene. You have a unique chance to see them up close and personal!
GENRE: Funk & Soul
WHEN: Saturday, 20/8 @ 8:30PM
WHERE: Open Studio – 204 High St, Northcote
THE WEEPING WILLOWS are just one of the many acts you can catch at The Retreat Hotel’s ‘AMERICANAFEST’ this Sunday afternoon into evening. These songs were almost made for a Sunday session, and there’s no better place in Melbourne for one of those than the mighty Retreat.
Other amazing folk names including Suzannah Espie, Jemma Nicole, Sarah Carroll and Sean McMahon take the stage in an action-packed all-day festival of American Country/Folk stylings.
GENRE: Country, Americana
WHEN: Sunday, 21/8 @ 2PM
WHERE: Retreat Hotel – 280 Sydney Rd, Brunswick
SKYSCRAPER STAN, so named for the height he possesses, usually playing alongside his band – ‘The Commission Flats’ – he is bringing a rare duo show to the underground surrounds at The Grace Darling’s basement room this Friday night as part of ‘Dewar’s Lock Inn’. The music is free and there are award-winning whiskeys from the Dewar’s brand to be tasted and to tempt thee throughout the evening.
Rest assured, Stan is THE MAN, and you can trust in this duo show just as much as when he’s lined up with The Commission Flats, who will be touring Australia & NZ later this year. Check him out as a bit of a teaser for the tour.
GENRE: Rock, Acoustic
WHEN: Friday, 19/8 @ 7PM
WHERE: Grace Darling Hotel (Basement) – 114 Smith St, Collingwood
WHAT ABOUT SOMETHING DIFFERENT…?
RUCKUS SLAM! returns to Melbourne this coming Monday at Bar 303 in Northcote. Regarded as one of Australia’s most unique spoken-word competition formats, it also combines special musical guests melded in amongst the competitors for a rounded day of thought-provoking wordsmithery (is that even a word?!)
We’re excited that one of our dear friends from Brisbane, Georgia Rose (previously of ‘Hollow Drums’) will be performing her solo/acoustic tunes at this week’s Ruckus Slam!
GENRE: Spoken Word
WHEN: Monday 22/8 @ 8PM
WHERE: 303 – 303 High St, Northcote

Author DetailsJosh Forner
Josh Forner is a folk/pop songwriter from Melbourne, Australia and Virginia, USA. Forner was born in Melbourne on July 2 1988, and spent the first 18 months of his life there before moving with his parents to the town of Reston in Virginia, USA. At the age of 3, Forner and his mother returned to Melbourne, where he has stayed ever since.
Josh sings of love, primarily (wow, what a shock right?), but also on his list of ‘hot topics’ are politics, famine, poverty and - of course – landscapes: the folk writer’s favourite.
He’s played with some of Melbourne’s stalwarts including Timothy Cannon, Bridget Pross, Mr Brady, Pro Rata, Gabriel Lynch & Kyle Taylor, and has contributed two of his tracks to non-profit compilation CDs in the past.
Josh’s repertoire continues to grow. He released his first album, a 10-track LP entitled ‘Leading to Nowhere’ at The Workers Club on May 28th, 2013. Forner has since returned to the studio to begin work on a 5-track solo EP to be released by the end of 2013. Following that, he has plans for album number two in 2014.
