Hello and welcome back to another installation of ‘Melting Pot’s Top 4’ – thanks so much for sticking with us as we continue to bring you the 4 absolute must-see gigs in Melbourne this coming week.

We’re scouring deep and hard to find you the cream of the crop that live music in this town has to offer!

//thursday// tom lee-richards ‘beside you’ launch

TOM LEE-RICHARDS is one of Melbourne’s favourite adopted Kiwi exports and since moving away from his previous project, Catch/Release, TLR has been going from strength to strength with his solo releases, which include delicately and immaculately produced videos and a constant stream of catchy singles since 2015.

‘Beside You’ is his latest installment and continues on his empathetic storytelling vibe, along side catchy rhythmic-based musicianship, intelligent and stylishly arranged looping, and his unique, passionate and soulful voice.

It’s all going down at Fitzroy’s Bar Open with support from Melting Pot favourites, Piano Dream Pop goddess Natalie Carolan and the ridiculously talented Grim Fawkner.

GENRE: Alt. Folk; Singer/Songwriter
WHEN: Thursday, 6/4 @ 8:30PM
WHERE: Bar Open – 317 Brunswick St, Fitzroy
COST: $10

//friday// pony face ‘justine’ single launch

Melbourne indie rockers PONY FACE return with the first release from their imminent 5th studio album, the single ‘Justine,’ which launches this Friday night at the fabled Ding Dong Lounge.

Drawing influences from a wide-ranging spread of musical styles, Pony Face seem to sit somewhere in the spectrum of Indie Rock to Shoegazer, considering the sometimes haunting yet blissful melodic breaks with which they are associated. Elements of Psychadelic Rock are also at the forefront of their sound, and this path is constructed further with this latest offering.

Baby Blue and Closet Straights are supporting for Friday’s show.

GENRE: Indie Rock; Folk Rock
WHEN: Friday 7/4 @ 9PM
WHERE: Ding Dong Lounge – 18 Market Lane, Melbourne CBD
COST: $17.35 (incl. BF) or at the door if available

For the first time in over a decade, THE BLACKEYED SUSANS are releasing an album of brand new, original material. Entitled ‘Close Your Eyes and See,’ the Melbourne leg of their album launch tour rolls into The Corner Hotel this weekend.

A dreamy rock-infused album led by classic country and folk influences, fans of TBS won’t be disappointed with the new release. Having the rare bestowing of ‘National Treasures’ from Rolling Stone magazine, and having toured with immortals like Johnny Cash and Leonard Cohen in the past, they come with high repute which is definitely earned.

Skyscraper Stan and the Commission Flats open the show whilst The Spoils play The Velvet Underground & Nico in support.

GENRE: Rock; Folk Rock
WHEN: Saturday, 8/4 @ 8PM
WHERE: The Corner Hotel – Cnr. Swan & Stewart Sts, Richmond
COST: $33.50 (incl. BF) or at the door if available.

Author Details

Josh Forner

Josh Forner is a folk/pop songwriter from Melbourne, Australia and Virginia, USA. Forner was born in Melbourne on July 2 1988, and spent the first 18 months of his life there before moving with his parents to the town of Reston in Virginia, USA. At the age of 3, Forner and his mother returned to Melbourne, where he has stayed ever since.

Josh sings of love, primarily (wow, what a shock right?), but also on his list of ‘hot topics’ are politics, famine, poverty and - of course – landscapes: the folk writer’s favourite.

He’s played with some of Melbourne’s stalwarts including Timothy Cannon, Bridget Pross, Mr Brady, Pro Rata, Gabriel Lynch & Kyle Taylor, and has contributed two of his tracks to non-profit compilation CDs in the past.

Josh’s repertoire continues to grow. He released his first album, a 10-track LP entitled ‘Leading to Nowhere’ at The Workers Club on May 28th, 2013. Forner has since returned to the studio to begin work on a 5-track solo EP to be released by the end of 2013. Following that, he has plans for album number two in 2014.
